Week 8 Guiding Questions

1. After viewing the Segment 1 video, what surprised you? Why?

 

   I was surprised to find that 20% or less of the questions in class involve high order thinking. In my experiences as a teacher I loved posing high order questions that require a deeper understanding and thought process. Posing the higher order questions help students relate the topic of study to real life examples and make learning more meaningful and it should be done a lot more than just 20%.

 

2. After viewing the Segment 2 video, what do YOU need to consider as you are planning questions for instruction? Why?

 

   It is important to plan strategic questions to engage students thinking and make learning effective and meaningful. It is important to ask both closed and open questions. Closed questions allow students to recall knowledge and can act as an assessment of learning. Answers that require recalling of factual information can encourage reluctant students to participate and gain confidence (without the fear of failing).

 

    Open questions allow students to broaden their thinking. When planning questions a teacher should keep in mind the kind of answers they want the students to produce and ask question open enough to guide them to the answer (how does you family use water as oppose to how does you family use water today?) Questions posed should allow students to relate to the topic so they are able to make real life connection.

    It is also important for teachers to anticipate the answers so they are able to address any misconceptions and gaps in learnings.

3. After viewing the Segment 3 video, what are some potential challenges that you think you may face in attempting to explore students' thinking via questioning? How might you address these challenges?

    Questioning students are a vital part of learning. But posing high order questions can be challenging:

  • Higher order questions require students to think which may take time and when there are only limited hours in a lesson teacher may feel the need to move on. But it is important to allow students the time to think and answer which in the long run will be more effective learning.

  • As higher order questioning may not always have a clear cut right or wrong answer many students may be reluctant to answer. Therefore it is important to create a safe to fail culture in the classroom and letting the students feel comfortable about answering and learning. It is also important to affirm and praise efforts to encourage answering.

  • Many times questioning can become a one to one conversation between the teacher and the student. Asking higher order questions and making it a whole class discussion can create a rich engaging learning environment for all.

 

4. After completing the Growing Success eModule, explain how you will use the achievement charts in your practicum. We will revisit the achievement charts in greater detail in Foundations II, but this serves as an introduction for you.

    I will most likely have to create assessment during my practicum there, I would use specific expectations and the achievement chart to create appropriate assessment. I would also use the achievement chart to give appropriate feedback to students and parents and descriptive feedback on how to improve.
