Foundation 3- Week 4- TRC

After examining the TRC’s Calls to Action (specific to Education for Reconciliation), the videos and other resources, what questions or concerns do you have regarding your role as a beginning teacher within the context of integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods into your journey?

The TRC call to actions has many actions specifically targeting educations. As a new teacher I need to understand the importance of aboriginal studies for all Canadian students. It is a vital part of Canadian history. I believe education is the essential to bring about real change in Canada by the challenging the stereotypes.

I believe it is important to have students immersed in indigenous teachings through out the school year with in all subject areas. This will warrant effective learning and ensure knowledge is translated into application. It should be taught in a balance way where students are exposed to the history and the modern application of the teachings. Students should understand, the sacrifices of the aboriginal people and the contribution they have made to the Canadian society.

As a new teacher, it can be very daunting to apply aboriginal teaching in the classrooms as I myself lack a lot of knowledge in the subject. Nonetheless, there are many recourses for teachers to support them in incorporation of indigenous knowledge in schools. As new teachers, we need to understand the important of exposing our students to indigenous knowledge and make use of the recourses form the Ministry of education and others. We also need to be open to gaining new knowledge and be welcoming to local aboriginal leaders to come into schools and share their knowledge.

2. How might you incorporate one or some of the resources into your LRP?

The FMNI scope and Sequence is a great document that has taken out specific expectations that directly connect to indigenous studies. It is also outlines other recourses that can support teachers in planning lessons. The Aboriginal Education strategy also outlines specific lesson for different grades, which can easily be incorporated in planning.
