I choose to write a free verse poem about the history of the international mother language day (21st of February). I choose this, as it is a part of my own heritage and Bengali is my mother language. Language is a big part of one’s identity and in many cases in the past and in today’s world many minority group’s identity are supressed. People of Bangladesh protested and died to have their voices heard but it seems history repeats itself, which is why I repeated one verse. I used the Bengali song “akusa February” (21st February) in the background as the song is a remembrance of the history of 21st February and used speech bubbles as the visual as representations of voice and language. As teachers, it is vital to know our students backgrounds and reflect that in our lessons. We should encourage individuality and give them tools to express their views, which will enrich understanding and global citizenship.

Creating a poem about a social justice is a great way to allow students to learn and express themselves in a creative way. Students have the freedom to research and inquire about different issues that resonates with them and creating a poem gives students a creative outlet to voice their opinion. Creating poverty for performance help achieve a variety of curriculum expectation from language, arts, social studies and sciences. It can be very easily be modified for all grade levels and abilities. The task can be flexible to allow students to choose a creative outlet they are comfortable with (poem, rap, song etc). This allows students learn about issues that they are interested in while learning tools to express themselves in a creative way. It also exposes students to other point of views in a light and respectful manner.
