About me

I am Farzana Ahmed a teacher candidate. I am a very curious person and love to explore and find out new things . I love challenging myself and I love the feeling of success after the challenge even more.

I was born in Bangladesh but grew up in Kuwait and London, UK  (so I love my potatoes and the rain). I moved to the most polite nation of Canada in 2012 which I call home now. I have a husband who is also my exploring partner and my daughter who is an exact copy of me but just 22 years younger.

I love babies, my daughter, the color green, anything that flys, anything that's fast, questions that start with why, interesting pen, red buttons, my husband,  traveling, FOOD, jokes, a little bit of everything.

I dislike tests, cloudless sunny, hot days, people being late.

Personal statement

Why do I want to be a teacher?

A teacher, like parents, political leaders, are one of the core foundations of any society. They educate and inspire the future generations to become doctors, lawmakers, engineers etc.

I want to be a part of the profession that educated and inspires the future generation. I want to directly impact the future by engaging curious minds and encouraging inquiry and learning to bring about a better future for all.

Why do I want to teach?

In my career as a student, my teachers have played a great part in my life. I have had some great teachers. All of them has played their part in inspiring me and equipping me with the tools to become an active member of the society. My teachers have pushed me when I wanted to give up and pulled me away from the wrong path. They have been there in every step to motivate me and bring out my best.

As a teacher, I may teach long divisions and homophones on daily bases but in the long run, that’s will be forgotten. I want to teach more the just ABC’S and 123s, I want to teach and equip the future generation with all the knowledge and skills so that they are able to get the most out of themselves and become positive contributors to society.  Long after the class on forces and persuasive writing, the student will remember what was fun or interesting. They may not grow up to use Sin equations but will use the skills like graphic tablets to break down information, organizational tools to make things easier in hard times.

That’s why I want to teach. I want to teach to inspire and motivate the future generations. I want to bring out the best in humanity and show them how the world is their oyster just like my teacher showed me.

Why do I want to teach children in elementary school?

Elementary schooling is the foundation of every individual's life. It is at the elementary school a person learns to socialize with others, learns to share or hold their ground. They take the first steps to becoming independent. They learn ABC and 123s that they use for the rest of their lives.

I want to equip children with these vital foundational skills they will continue to use for the rest of their lives. I want to set them up for success from the start. I want to build their characters that will lead them to become curious and enquiring individuals. I want to aid in setting the good values of caring and sharing so they grow up to become good global citizens. I want to play a part in building the foundations so that one day they can become the tallest tower.

How do I know that being a teacher is what I really want to do?

It was at my volunteering experience at Brock elementary school. I was placed in the JK/SK class. I enjoyed it but it just didn’t feel complete. One day, the grade 3/4 teacher asked if I could help her grades 4 students with their long division. I reluctantly (as division isn’t really my strongest skill) jumped at the opportunity to get a different experience. I spend 40 minutes with the students in grade 4. They all struggled with the concept of long division and were close to giving up learning. But I broke it down, motivated them by using easier examples and built up to the harder problems.

    And There it was.

The AHA moment. Lightbulbs went off all around. I saw the halo.  The purpose of life apophenia. Like the once you see in the movies when time stands still and  the choir sings Hallelujah.

As the students were able to comprehend the problems and succeeded in working through a long division all on their own, their face lit up. The frustrations they felt evaporated and was replaced with a sense of achievement. At the moment I remembered the moments in my own math classes, when I struggled with math myself and the feeling I felt after completing a task I struggled in. I realized how I played a part in teaching them a new concept and making the students feel successful

I loved it. And I want to do more for it. I want to do it daily for the rest of my life.

What is it about teaching that leads me to believe that I am suited to be a teacher?

It is the job of a teacher to inspire and guide young minds. I myself have always been a very curious person and enjoyed inquiring and finding out the whys and hows. I am passionate about spreading that same mindset to the youth.

Teachers have the role in nurturing curiosity and inquisitiveness. To truly do a good job in spreading the enquring mindset to students I believe, the teacher too needs to have the same mindset. A teacher needs to see the world with wonder and ask questing and think like students. I feel that my inqusitive mindset will allow me to be a good teacher who will always encourage inquiry and truly amaze my student with learning.

What activities / experiences / conversations on your practicum day confirmed my decision to be a teacher?

I had the pleasure of observing a small grade 3/4 class. I loved that the students already knew my name and was excited to see me. They were very eager to know me and asked me for help. I found a student at recess sitting with the math worksheet they did in the morning and trying to work through it. She asked me to help her. From my learning, I knew not to give her the answer but to guide her to the answer. As I guided her I saw here slowly grow her understanding and come to the solution to the problem and as she got the answer she said, “I got it.” That was the same moment I GOT IT too. I may not have had a lot to do with her success but I knew at that moment, someday I would have the opportunity to give that “I got it" moment to every student in my class. That’s why I want to become a teacher.

How did the practicum day confirm my decision to be a teacher?

I had the great opportunity to observe a grade 3/4 class (Exactly the grades I want to teach). I LOVED IT. After being in a classroom for weeks and learning all the conceptual knowledge it was a much-awaited observation day. The ability to finally see all the facts and knowledge we have been learning in action.

In the classroom, I have an amazing AT, Mr. Philips. He modeled teaching amazing. He created a very interactive and enjoyable learning environment for all his students. He made it look simple and carefree and natural. That’s the kind of teacher I want to be. He reminded me that it can all be overwhelming now but truly we are here for the students and at the end, if we create a good relationship with the students and know our students it will become the most meaningful experience for our students and for us as teachers.

I was reminded of why I was struggling through this program. I was able to see the enthusiasm, the  smiles, and graduates in the faces of the students. My intentions of becoming a teacher to positively contribute to the future generations were highlighted. The experience reminded and reaffirmed my decision to become a teacher.

PROFESSIONAL

Self Assessment

Term 4

Term 2

How have you demonstrated (or not) the criteria these past few weeks?

I understand the importance of being professional (ie. punctuality, respect, integrity, well dressed, participation etc.) especially in a degree that is teaching us to be a professional. That is why, I have been present in every class and on time and participate in all activities in class and online and keeping up to date of weekly readings.

I take the initiate to start my work early to complete the work before the deadline. I use my term calendar which indicates all the due dates (and social obligation days- days that I can’t do any work) to make the weekly to do list. I plan out my time so that I am able to complete all reading and assignment ahead of the deadline (As I am aware, I  panic if I feel that I am unprepared, so I will rush and produce a bad piece of work). I believe, I am continuously going through self-evaluation as I make lists of tasks and evaluate and re-evaluate my action plans for the week and prioritize tasks. I have also been writing a regular blog evaluating my feelings, successes and outlook for the next weeks which has been very helpful distressing tool and also allows me to reflect on my achievements and how to improve.

I have always conducted myself with integrity and respect. I have openly taken into account peer’s views and always respectfully carried out discussions.  I have provided help to peers wherever possible and asked for peers to critically criticise my work so that I can improve.

In what areas do you feel you have excelled?  Why?  How might these areas be evident to others in the class?

I do pride myself in my attendance and punctuality record. I have never missed a class yet and I makes sure I leave the house with ample time just in case the traffic don’t cooperate (This I feel especially proud because I have a toddler, and there’s always challenging moments with toddles as you’re leaving the house). I also have a detailed calendar for the term and use it to plan my weeks so that I can complete my work on time.

I also manage myself in a respectful manner and follow the code of ethics as they are the general values I live by. I have openly taken into account my peers point of views and always provide help and feedback in a respectful manner. And I have also done my part in group work on time. Especially during Learning and development case study discussion, there are always many views and opinions, I enjoy discussing the rational behind everyone thoughts and coming to a conclusion that everyone agrees with and any disagreements were openly and respectfully discussed and resolved.

What areas do you feel you require more improvement? Why? How might you improve upon these areas?

I feel that I could improve my participation in large groups. That is something I have struggled with all my life which, most likely stems from my primary schooling where students only spoke when spoken to and wrong answers and questions were ridiculed by the teacher and peers. So, if I am not comfortable with my surrounding environment and the people, I wouldn’t voluntary take part in large group discussing. But I do feel as the weeks go on everyone is becoming more comfortable so, hopefully I will feel confident enough to voice my opinions.

I would also like to improve in my self-assessment aspect. I assess my work after I am finished, but I think carrying out ongoing assessment in each stage from the planning to the final product using the assessment rubrics will improve my quality of work. I have seen a peer collect some initial thoughts and then look at the rubric to see if she has accounted for all the aspects in the rubrics and then added more and finalised planning etc. I really need to do that.

What overall level best reflects the criteria?  Why? What evidence do you have to support your self-assessment?

I would say overall I am on level 3 as I do constantly put in my upmost effort in all my work and have always shown professional behaviour towards my instructors and peers. I have persevered thorough tough days (when I just want to give up and sleep in) and motivated peers who feel the same. I keep the end goal in mind. I know I want to be a teacher, therefore I am taking small manageable (a week, a day, a task at a time) steps to get me there.

But there are many aspects that I need to improve on. I need to push myself to participate more in class and take initiative in group works. I feel I need to conduct more self-assessments on assignments to evaluate and improve my work.

What are your next steps?

I need to do more self-refection throughout my work to improve its quality. I need to adopt a practice to look at the rubrics at the start and right after planning a response, this will help me to check if I have included all the components required and improve my  to achieve the highest level.  I also need to work on my ‘public speaking’ voice so I can feel comfortable to speak up. I understand the instructors have created a safe to fail environment.  Instead of overthinking a response I need to participate in large group discussions.
